Wood’s Lamp Examination
A Wood’s lamp is used to help diagnose a patient with a ringworm fungal infection. One very common species of ringworm will glow apple-green under a Wood’s lamp, so this test is a quick screening test to help diagnose a ringworm infection. If your pet is suspected to have ringworm, we will often bring the Wood’s lamp to your pet’s exam room, turn off the lights, and shine the Wood’s lamp on your pet’s skin lesions. If the hair around these lesions glows apple-green, we will recommend a ringworm fungal culture and will also collect samples of their hair to examine under a microscope during your appointment.
